How to overcome Fear

How do you overcome fear?

Fear is a natural yet powerful human emotion. It is an instinctual quality used to protect ourselves from imminent danger. While fears stem from real threats, they can also originate from fake, illusionary, imagined dangers. Fear starts early on in life and continues to heighten as we grow, unable to cope and manage emotions due to learned behaviors influenced by our environment. These learned behaviors (e.g. fear of spider, dark, separating from mom) cause stressors and anxiety that can interfere with normal daily life activities. Early on a caregiver can help alleviate these emotions by being receptive to a child’s feelings, understanding and present.

I had many fears😨 all throughout life up until adulthood. I feared death (e.g. loss of loved ones), failure (e.g. in school, work, relationships etc.), rejection, etc. I wanted to let go of these fears, but as much as I tried I was unable to do that on my own . I tried variety of strategies to overcome fear, but mindfulness was the only outlet that saved me.

Through the help of meditation 🍃 I learned that from the moment we are born we take pictures of everything in our lifetime and store those pictures in our mind. We have attachments to these pictures/ thoughts and because of that these cause fears, worries, stress, and anxiety. Think of that specific moment you felt fearful about a specific thing or situation. You are able to bring that moment up, however what we don’t realize is that it is just a picture, it is false. We imprint these pictures in our mind and perceive the world based on our thoughts.

The way to overcome fear is let go of these attachments we have.
