What to Expect in Your First Meditation Class
Thinking about your first meditation class can bring up practical questions. What will you do? How long will it take? And what if your mind feels busy the whole time?
At Bayside Meditation, the place to start is a free, 45-minute, one-to-one introduction. You can join at our center in Bayside, Queens, or online. The introduction gives you time to meet a guide, learn about our method, and try a short meditation. No previous meditation experience is needed.

What happens during the introduction
Meet your guide and ask questions
You will have time to talk with a guide about what brought you to meditation. You might be curious about the practice, have questions about repeated thoughts, or want to understand how personal guidance works. You do not need to arrive with a perfectly worded explanation.
If you have tried meditation before, you can ask how this approach relates to your experience. If this is your first time, start with whatever you would like to understand.
Learn the Bayside Meditation method
Our guided practice involves reflecting on your experiences, recognizing the thoughts and patterns you have carried, and learning to let them go. Your instructor explains the process step by step.
In this teaching, “true mind” means your original nature, beneath the identity and worldview built through experience. Letting go means releasing the accumulated mind that can obscure that nature. It does not mean erasing your memories.
You can read more about how the Bayside Meditation method works before your visit, or bring your questions to the introduction.
Try a short meditation
The introduction includes a short opportunity to try the practice with guidance. You do not need to know how to meditate or have a quiet mind before you arrive.
Ask questions when a step is unclear. If you feel uncomfortable, let your guide know and ask to pause. Your first visit is a chance to learn about the approach and consider whether it feels right for you.
How to prepare for your first visit
Keep preparation simple. A few practical steps can help you give the session your attention:
Check your booking details and allow the full 45 minutes for the introduction.
Wear clothing you feel comfortable sitting in.
For an online session, choose a quiet spot and check your internet connection and audio beforehand.
Bring any questions about the method, the session format, or continuing with classes.
You do not need special clothing, flexibility, or previous meditation experience. If you have questions about seating or anything you need to participate comfortably, ask before your appointment.

What happens after the free introduction
You can ask about ongoing classes and membership options during your visit. Regular classes are separate from the free introduction and last one hour.
After enrollment, your first three to five regular sessions are one-to-one so you can learn the method with individual guidance. Group sessions are for members. Further personal guidance can be arranged by separate appointment as your practice develops.
See our personal and group classes page for the current class format and ways to continue.
